OneStream's Forward Finance Index: AI Adoption Outpaces Enterprise Value
By Grant Deker · OneStream Solution Architect ·
OneStream released its inaugural Forward Finance Index on October 13, 2026, a benchmark built on a survey of 1,300 CFOs and equivalent Finance leaders, according to the company's announcement. The headline finding is a gap: AI is widely used to cut manual work, but few organizations report that it has changed enterprise outcomes.
What the Index Measures
The Index benchmarks organizations against the Forward Finance Blueprint, the AI operating model OneStream introduced in May. Respondents came from mid-market ($500M–$999.9M revenue) and enterprise ($1B–$10B+) organizations in the U.S., U.K., and France. Each was scored on five equally weighted dimensions: AI strategy, data, workforce, operations, and IT collaboration, and placed in one of four tiers: Leaders, Advancers, Adopters, and Followers. Per the release, 6% lead across all five areas and 52% are Followers.
The Gaps
Per the release, 74% of Finance leaders say AI is reducing manual intervention in close, reporting, and reconciliation, but only 14% say it has reached "enterprise value and decision impact." On data, 71% are confident in their team's ability to provide trusted data, yet only 40% call their financial reporting data fully transparent. On IT, 71% see Finance and IT as strategic partners, but only 15% have a fully integrated joint roadmap with shared KPIs. Only 15% have a fully embedded AI skills program. Four in ten executives say data quality issues regularly block or delay AI projects.
The Leaders stand out most on data lineage and IT alignment: 86% of Leaders maintain an end-to-end view of data lineage across financial and operational systems, and 88% harmonize operational data with IT, versus 68% of Followers. CEO Tom Shea said that deploying AI on data you cannot fully trace, explain, or trust "compounds enterprise risk." The release also quotes Robert Kugel of ISG Research, who said every decision has to be transparent, explainable, and traceable. Coverage is also available from BigDATAwire.
Our Take
This is vendor-published research, and the release does not name the firm that ran the survey, so treat the percentages as directional. The pattern is still familiar from implementation work: AI results depend on the quality and traceability of the data underneath. For OneStream customers, that means the unglamorous work matters first — a clean, governed data model, clear reconciliation and lineage, and Finance and IT agreeing on ownership. If AI is on your roadmap, a useful first step is to assess whether your current application can actually answer the question "where did this number come from?"
